messiah novel (drive me crazy, part 2)
(I've confirmed the target.)
Two men were standing on top of the bridge. It seemed like they were engaged in a deep conversation, facing each other while a fairly strong wind moving past made their bangs fly in all directions.
His legs were open so his feet were at shoulder width, standing at an angle while facing the target. Now the man he was targeting was in his line of sight. While raising his rifle with his left hand, he quietly put it against his right shoulder and cheek. He carefully watched the sight as he lined up his aim with the target.
Less than ten seconds. He turned his head diagonally, adding his left hand to his stance. Now the gun was stable.
Eiri liked shooting while lying prone.
Since his body has a small build, he wouldn't be able to support the gun barrel due to the rifle's characteristic recoil if he would shoot while standing up. Of course you also have to support your body if you're standing or kneeling while the time to shoot draws near. And even more, every single time you need to put the gun to your cheek, have a good grip on the gun and have it at the right angle. A rifle is especially hard to handle among all guns. Like a woman that you've spent a lot of time with, you'll get your own way of dealing with it the more you get used to it. That's what the person who taught Eiri to shoot a rifle had said.
Preparing his breathing, he put a lot more pressure on his body. It was so he wouldn't move the gun's scope a lot.
As he put more strain onto his body, he became aware of his breathing again.
Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. Since he had practiced many times, he had become used to it enough to not miss the timing, and he put pressure into his finger on the trigger.
Bam and whoosh, that kind of sound rang out. Thanks to the new kind of silencer on the rifle, ear protection wasn't needed. But for a moment his body still got unsteady because of the recoil.
He confirmed the impact through the scope. He couldn't see the target on top of the bridge anymore.
The place of impact hadn't been good. He had to fine-tune the alignment of the scope. He had to do it quickly before his gun would grow cold, since the place of impact would lower otherwise.
And then he fired two shots. He confirmed through the scope that the target had disappeared from a 400 meter distance.
(Confirm the target's fall.)
Now he took out his binoculars to see how the fall ended up.
It's preferable for the target to have fallen head-first, so the cervical vertebrae would be fractured or the head would get crushed, which would cause instant death through cerebral contusion. After confirming it from a distance, it seemed like the fall caused by the two shots did make him "dead", but there was a problem with the impact point on the target. He was shot in the shoulder. Despite how insignificant it might seem, it would leave a suspicious sign on the target.
The phone rang. Eiri answered it at the third ring. If there was something abnormal (like him being captured) going on, he was supposed to let it ring four or more times.
"My, my. Kaidou Eiri."
The godfather is the boss on the other side of the phone.
Yes, he answered curtly.
"Although I think you already know, it's unacceptable to shoot him in the shoulder."
"Yes."
"To put it simply, rather than killing a target with a bullet, the goal of sniping is to make sure it looks like an accidental death. That's why it's preferable to shoot them in the back of the head, so the point of impact is hidden by the hair. I'll give you a demerit for it this time."
The voice pointed this out strictly, and in addition instructed him to complete his simulated training using a doll.
"With this, your basic education has been completed. From tomorrow on you'll be moved to the actual field. Make sure to not forget the "purification" out there, just like today."
When the call died, Eiri quickly dismantled his rifle and stuffed into a Boston bag with a fake high school's name written on it.
Suddenly he looked up at the dusk sky. The stars were already out.
(So far away.)
Even now he liked to see them from the rooftops. Unfortunately Eiri no longer had the telescope that his father had bought for him.
Wherever it might be now after being considered rubbish, the person holding it might not even know that it was a magical tube that could discover the light of the stars. After having parted with it, Eiri instead got attracted by peering through the crosshairs of his scope. Through that he could see the twinkling of the parts of a complete stranger's life that they might never even talk about.
For Eiri, that was "purification."
"Purification"--- That was the Public Safety Bureau's secret term for following orders to make a target's death not only be entirely unsuspected to be murder, but to make it seem like an accidental death.
It's not just about direct murder using knives or guns. It's about slipping past the police's assessment of the situation and the autopsy, it's about carrying out an assassination that's disguised as an accidental death.
It was a section that was particularly hidden within the Security Bureau, Special Public Safety Section 5 with the nickname "Sakura." That was Eiri's job now.
