( interview yuuki - reprofile august 10th 2017 )

Izawa Yuuki's impure motives for becoming an actor and the reason he became serious about his work as an actor

The actor Izawa Yuuki-san who entered the entertainment world as an elementary schooler and has various talents, including singing, dancing and action. Nowadays he has appeared as part of the main cast of TV dramas and was chosen to play the lead part in stage plays. As one of the up-and-coming young actors he gives off an overwhelming presence. In this time's "Men's boost" we focus on that Izawa-san's private life and his journey all the way to the present.

What do you often do on your days off?

In my private life I know a lot of people with different occupations, like artists, apparel makers and designers. Since I myself like clothes a lot, I talk to my designer friends about designing stuff together. A lot of new things are born through casual conversations.

Are you trying anything new recently?

I planned a bus tour on July 29th with three fellow actors. So I learned how difficult the process of making things is through that. But exactly because it's difficult I also get attached at the same time. I'd like to keep planning things from here on out.

What made you want to go into the entertainment business?

A friend of my mother sent a CV to an entertainment agency. I didn't have any clear purpose or goal, so I entered the world of entertainment with the impure goal of wanting to be liked. (laughs)

Since when were you able to decide that you could live off doing entertainment?

Actually, if I realise "I can do it if I try", I get all fired up. For example, I was especially bad at math when it came to studying. Since I was scolded by my mother, I thought I should try studying seriously for once. I got my lowest score in math class once, I only got 4 points since I only solved the first problem. (laughs)

What was the result of you studying seriously?

I got the first place in my grade. With that I understood that I could do it if I just tried studying, and I immediately stopped doing it. (laughs) After that I started playing soccer seriously, and during my first match I scored 2 goals. Just like with math, I stopped right away again. But since I entered an entertainment agency, I couldn't get satisfied with my songs and lessons no matter how much I practiced. Because of that I got aware of the depth of songs and dancing, and I really got into it.

We talked about her a little just now, but what is your mother like?

She's like the sun. She's bright and illuminates the people around her. I respect her, and I never had a rebellious phase towards her. Since my family is very close, I sometimes go shopping with my mother or go out with my little sister and my father.

What is your father like?

My father runs an okonomiyaki shop and a beauty parlor. When I was 14 years old, my father stopped working as a salaryman and started his own independant business. The okonomiyaki shop is 10 years old this year, and the beauty parlor is 2 years old. He started the beauty parlor because he wanted to help a beautician who worked at a beauty parlor nearby the okonomiyaki shop get independence.

Why did he go from being an office worker to running an okonomiyaki shop?

My father is an ambitious person who's always persuing stuff in that "this is what I can do right now, so that's what I want to do now" kind of way. He quickly takes action once he decides to do something, and he ends up driving himself into a corner where he can't escape it anymore. I think my father is great in that sense, I'm jealous of him.

Do you want to get better than your father?

Although we have a good relationship, my father doesn't compliment me at all about my current work as an actor. He also doesn't come to see my performances. That sort of "Although I'm cheering for how hard you're working right now, as long as you haven't reached your goal yet, I can't assess it yet" is my father's kind of encouragement, I think. I want to succeed and stand shoulder to shoulder with my father.
